CONGRATULATIONS TO DR. THOMAS CLARK!
Dr. Thomas Clark, a retired educator from Augusta Technical College, contractor/builder and longtime resident of Augusta is the fortunate winner of this year’s Horizon Foundation Mercedes Raffle. The yearly event is the major fundraiser for the Horizon Foundation which performs service activities in Augusta and surrounding areas throughout the year. It was held at Mercedes Benz of Augusta on Thursday, 9 February 2023. His was the last ticket pulled—0694– of almost 1300 tickets sold.
This year’s vehicle is a 2022 GLC 300 SUV. Dr. Clark received the call notifying him of his good fortune on the eve of his birthday (10 February) from Dr. Mac Bowman, Founder and Chairman of Horizon Foundation. This year’s event marked a return to the full , festive and focused events of past years with the lessening of COVID 19 risks. Like in the past, there was health screening and health information session with BP checks and carotid artery scans. There were massage and healthful counseling on stress reduction and improved respiratory function and healthful relaxation from the staff of Himalayan Caves and Spa and outstanding cuisine from Ms. Cassandra Brinson of Café’ 209 and Jeane Pierce of Auntie Bam’s Nana Puttin who provided the beautiful and delicious desserts. The event was chronicled by WFXA Fox 54 with live broadcast with Mr. Jay Jefferies, Chief Meteorologist at Fox 54. As in the past, there is always a story. Dr. Clark has a 1980’s vintage Mercedes which has required multiple repairs recently and has been unreliable at times in getting his beloved wife back and forth for multiple weekly doctor’s treatment visits. There was a need—a necessity to do something to provide for reliable transport. Dr. and Mrs. Clark, despite their transportation issues, still were busy about helping others. They had helped Horizon yearly with their raffle support and, after the tragic death of their beloved son, they started a scholarship for high school students which they award yearly to local high school students going on to college. He received the call about his having won a new Mercedes Benz GLC 300 as he and the committee awarding this year’s scholarships met to do their work. He interrupted to receive the surprise call that he was this year’s raffle winner. After he takes ownership of his new vehicle this week, there is transportation uncertainty no more. Though retired, he continues to serve and look beyond self to help improve the lives of others with the awarding of the Thomas Clark, Jr. Scholarships each year since his death more than a decade ago. Congratulations to Dr. Clark on winning your new Mercedes GLC—300 SUV and —Happy Birthday!!!
Apparo Academy of Augusta receives Rotary Club of Augusta 2023 Signature Fundraiser donation.
Dr. Jennifer Jones, Founder and Executive Director of Apparo Academy of Augusta received a donation of $25,000 as this year’s Signature Fundraiser recipient of the Rotary Club of Augusta in combination with Dr. Mac Bowman Horizon Foundation. The check was presented by Rotary of Augusta President, Dr. Faye Hargrove at their weekly meeting on Monday, 13 February at Fat Man’s Café. Apparo Academy is an outstanding community resource in Augusta which provides full educational curriculum and support for children with and without developmental challenges. For those in need of special supportive services including professional nursing care, physical and occupational therapy, these are provided daily on site in addition to educational curriculum. The school and its stellar staff fills a great void in the community and provides and achieves the best of possibilities for all of its pupils. It joins recent past Signature Fundraiser recipients of The Rotary Club of Augusta and Horizon which include Childhood Advocacy Council/Childhood Enrichment, The Hope House, Christ Community Center ,and Augusta Locally Grown. Congratulations to Dr. Jones and the staff of Apparo. Rotary Club of Augusta and Horizon Foundation are pleased to continue their partnership in selecting worthy recipients from the community and aiding their outstanding efforts with the $25,000 donation each year.

THREE GENERATIONS OF SERVICE
2023 Horizon Foundation Mercedes Benz Fundraiser Raffle, as always, supplied many special moments. One premier visual was supplied unintentionally but, was sponsor of emotional response from Horizon CEO, De Pierce. De has been committed contributor and innovative leader of Horizon. His energy and effort is assuredly foundational in Horizon’s success and service. As we got into the “meat” of the raffle activities in the beautiful showroom of Mercedes Benz of Augusta, I was struck by the busy organizational and work efforts of De and his beautiful wife, Lisa, who usually worked from home as she coordinated all ticket sale activity as well as creating the handsome Horizon clothing, hats and overgarments worn by our Horizon team, but was on site at MB of Augusta this year. They were complementary in their words and actions from commencement till done. As the day went along, they were joined by beautiful daughter, Jeane Pierce Holder, Owner of Auntie Bam’s Nana Puttin, who supplied the beautiful and delicious desert pudding creations which were highlights of outstanding offered to the raffle attendees. As we approached the final hours of the drawing of tickets and the winning of the 2022 MB 300 GLC, generation one and two were joined by generation three in the person of De and Lisa’s granddaughter who had petitioned and pleaded to be allowed to adorn her lovely Horizon golf shirt, created by Grandmom Lisa and come to MB of Augusta to pull down ticket numbers as they were called. This was her first year of direct participation. She stayed till the pulling of the last ticket and the call to the winner, Dr. Thomas Clark of Augusta. She heard the words of faith, love, wisdom and service from her Granddad and by others who spoke of their passion to work continually for the greater good- -in love and faith and service. Three generations!! What a sight!! What examples of Love, family, faith and service beyond self for goals that uplift and enhance the lives of others. Grandfather De has the heart of a lion and the soul of a warrior. When I pointed out to him the picture and the blessing of three generations of service on display and in action on behalf of Horizon and its efforts in support of others, there was a smile and tear as he soaked in the majesty of such a special moment in time for the Pierce Family. We are grateful that they shared this with all present for this year’s event. Thank you, Pierce Family.
