...and the winner is Ticket #1044 - Ms. Nancy Wates!

The Horizon Foundation is thrilled to announce that the winner of the 2026 Annual Car Raffle is Ms. Nancy Wates of Edgefield, South Carolina, holding Ticket #1044. Ms. Wates is now the proud owner of a brand new 2025 Toyota Crown Hybrid automobile. Her ticket was the final one drawn from more than 1,200 tickets sold, creating a moment of great excitement and celebration. The drawing took place in the showroom of Miracle Toyota of North Augusta, owned by our corporate partners at Murphy Auto Group, where supporters gathered for this year’s Signature Fundraiser event. The final five tickets were drawn live on WJBF Channel 6 in Augusta, building anticipation to a crescendo until the last remaining ticket, Ms. Wates’, was revealed. She was understandably overjoyed, noting both the extended age and mileage of her present vehicle and her gratitude to have participated in a raffle that raises substantial funds for charitable outreach across our region.

The Annual Car Raffle serves as Horizon Foundation’s major yearly fundraiser, with all proceeds supporting its broad outreach efforts that assist area citizens with health and situational needs. The Foundation provides health screenings, offers education and instruction on heart-healthy habits that lessen cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and extends support in the form of food, clothing, and personal assistance. Horizon also partners with and provides institutional support to numerous organizations that serve the community, including The Salvation Army and The Family YMCA of Augusta, among many others. Each year, Horizon partners with the Rotary Club of Augusta for its Signature Fundraiser, through which $25,000 is awarded to a selected local charity. This year’s recipient is RISE Augusta, an organization dedicated to supporting and enhancing the academic performance of students in area schools. Congratulations to RISE Augusta on this well deserved honor!

This year’s Horizon/Rotary Club Raffle was an enjoyable and engaging community event. Dr. Mac Bowman, Founder of Horizon, and CEO De Pierce were among those drawing tickets until only five remained, heightening the anticipation before the live television finale. Guests enjoyed a variety of activities, including a miniature pickleball court set up by the Aiken Pickleball Association, giving attendees the opportunity to experience this rapidly growing and healthy activity. Horizon staff conducted blood pressure and pulse checks and provided valuable information on heart health (staff of Piedmont of Augusta Community Outreach). De Pierce and his family graciously provided a delicious Cajun buffet featuring gumbo and flavorful eggrolls, adding to the celebratory atmosphere. Special thanks are extended to Michelle Grant, owner of Sol Himalayan Salt Cave and Spa for their generous donation of exquisite treatments to the final five ticket holders.

Horizon Foundation expresses heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to the success of this year’s raffle. Thanks are extended to Dustin Young and the Rotary Club of Augusta for their continued partnership; to WJBF News Channel 6 wonderful staff for serving as media partner; to Mike Murphy and Austin Steed of Murphy Auto Group for their corporate support; to Ms. Tina D’Antignac, Branch Manager of Cadence Bank’s Daniel Village location, who coordinates Horizon Foundation’s banking needs; and to Ms. Zina McNeil of Advertising Solutions, who expertly manages the Foundation’s website and online ticket sales and is truly the straw that stirs the drink. Special thank you to SGM Brenda Miller, Commissioner William Fennoy, and Dr. Thomas Clark for assistance and spiritual support throughout the event. Most importantly, we thank each individual who purchased a ticket and helped make this charity raffle another tremendous success. Due to your generosity, meaningful outreach will continue throughout our area to improve Health, to Heal, to Help, to provide Hope, and to Honor those who serve others. Congratulations again to RISE Augusta, this year’s Signature Fundraiser recipient, and to Mrs. Nancy Wates, our 2026 Horizon Foundation Charity Raffle winner. Enjoy your beautiful new Toyota Crown Hybrid!

Horror Here; Horror There. Help Wanted. Help Needed

These are tough times which make us tougher as they bring out the resourcefulness that we may not have known we had.  Hurricane Helene and it’s indescribable damage in our beautiful Augusta and beyond.  Small towns and larger cities the devastation was an equal opportunity assailant.

The beautiful enclave of Asheville—ravished beyond words, thoughts or comprehension.  I had been there once spending a special weekend with Augusta kids there for a religious camp a short distance away in the mountains.  I wonder about the status of the camp as I have seen with horror what Helene did to the beautiful respite of artistic, creative, delicious, classic, modern hospitable, incomparable city of Asheville.

I miss my Augusta as well as that part of Asheville that became a permanent part of me after my one and only visit.  Prayers up and Blessings down for them and theirs—including newbie –Me.  The spirit of the people who made and grew such cities remain and with our help will spawn their anointed resurgence.

Even as we witness the horror of California.  I spent one great week there in July of 1976.  I was doing my sentinel cardiology rotation at the Presidio of San Francisco at now defunct Letterman Army Medical Center.  That summer was part of the solidification of my entry into Cardiology.  On 4th of July weekend, I flew to LA to visit family.  I took time out driving on self-explore.   Part of it took me to Pacific Palisades and Thousand Oaks, exquisitely beautiful beyond my southern natural flair.  To see it televised in blasphemous flames—unrepentant and resolved to ravage and claim its coastal beauty and make its habitants suddenly homeless its ashen, charred aftermath.  My heart broke again as with Augusta and Ashville.

Survival is my choice.  I rebuild as I must in my beautiful Augusta.  I do the Red Cross and Go Fund Me outreach for more personal support.  I know that I have to still do and be in service.  I can’t do it all but I can—I MUST do something as Horizon moves to purpose –to improve the health, to help, to provide hope, to heal and to honor those who do.  Much work to do at, at home and thousands of miles away.  We must not be deterred.  Much, much to do.
